Research & Consulting

My research interests cover several areas within the fields of development and emerging economies. Broadly speaking, I have an interest in the functioning of labour markets, especially urban informal ones. I have combined this interest with investigations of economic vulnerability amongst Delhi's street vendors.

Further back in time, I developed an interest in the operational aspects of liberalisation policies as practised amongst many emerging economies over the years. Amongst other areas, and more recently, I have developed an interest in research that sits at the intersection of aid, corruption and the environment. I am also interested in the economics of food security and how different political climates govern that space.

I have published in all these areas as well as in the area of education. A selection of these publications, and other work, appear on the next page.

My consulting work started in the mid-1990s, thus nowadays offering me the opportunity to draw upon an almost 30 year body of experience. The range of work I have been involved with is something I look back on with pride and satisfaction, knowing that I have made a positive impact on the decision making of numerous satisfied clients.

In the broadest terms, my work has included evaluating consumer spending trends in different sectors and regions of Europe for international investment banks; commenting on the application of prosperity indices on the formation of social capital measures for a major Middle Eastern entity; macroeconomic aspects of infrastructure planning within the Caribbean region and advising some of the region's largest multilateral lending and aid agencies; advising on the development of economic tools for measuring a government department's activities; advising on the development of academic programmes at level 7 in the UK and beyond.

I have also advised on the marketing and regulatory aspects of supplying alcoholic beverages to certain emerging economies for a major producer of beer products. Another exciting project led me to advise on the implications for the wider economy of listing, and delisting, of stocks on exchanges within the UK and elsewhere. Amongst other assignments I have also been called upon to advise on demographic shifts and population characteristics, and changes within these and their consequences for future labour markets, for several emerging economies.

The clients I have advised are made up of both private and public sector actors in different parts of world.
